2014 Bordeaux Releases – Château Mouton Rothschild and family – Clerc Milon and d’Armailhac

by David Porter

Big guns out this morning in the shape of the three wines from the Mouton Rothschild stable – Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Clerc Milon and Château d’Armailhac. Finally something for us all to really consider, a ‘proper’ primeur opportunity.

A welcoming ram at Mouton

Of these, our top recommendation is the First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild which at £2340/12 or £1170/6-pack is the best priced Mouton physically available in the market. In fact it is more than £500 per dozen cheaper than the 2007 vintage which is the next lowest. It is an impressive wine too, and seems well-supported at this price.

Neither of the other two wines offer quite such a strong reason to buy now, but as drinkers they have their place. Château Clerc Milon is the more convincing of the two, and it stood up really well when tasted at the château. At £320/12 comes recommended if your intention is to put it away in your own cellar and drink it, although there’s perhaps not enough headroom to allow for paying in bond storage.

The story is similar for Château d’Armailhac at £230/12, very attractive wine in 2014, and this is a fair price (the next cheapest is the 2007 at £300) for putting in the cellar for drinking from 2021.
