Fié Gis (Sauvignon Gris)

An ancient but almost extinct relative, and possible pre-cursor, of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s low cropping and reluctance to grow particularly enthusiastically meant that few growers replanted Fié Gris after phylloxera. Eric Chevalier, in the Nantais near the mouth of the Loire, is one of only a handful of producers of this fascinating variety. The Sauvignon Blanc connection can be seen in the slightly grassy feel to the fruit, but there are very fresh white fleshy fruits in evidence and a crisper more mineral feel. Sometimes known as Sauvignon Gris.
