Malvasia

A catch-all name for a family of grape varieties grown across the Mediterranean basin; one of the oldest known grape varieties, originating with the Ancient Greeks. Whilst most Malvasias will be clean dry white wines, its most famous incarnation is as Malmsey, the sweetest of the Madeiras.

A superb Malvasia from Croatia

We were led to Istrian wine by our our friend Tony Hodges. Tony, who sadly departed earlier this year, coined the slogan 'The lightness of being Istria' for the nascent wine export drive. The 'basic' wines have been well-appreciated for a couple of years.

Christmas near Cornwell … New Year In Cornwall

Closing the shop on Christmas Eve (we are open until five tomorrow) is always a challenge and I may have to see if I can sneak off a bit early to get to my favourite carol service. The charm is worth it - the tiny thirteenth century St Philip's church of Little Rollright has no electricity, and so the rare services here are entirely candle-lit.
