Sagrantino

A rare red grape variety found pretty much only around the town of Montefalco in Umbria. Unrelated to any other known grape variety, its origins remain a mystery. The enormous tannins meant that for most of its history Sagrantino has been used only to make sweet passito wines, but recent years have seen some astounding dry red wines produced with astounding concentration and some longevity. Arnaldo-Caprai are the leading producer.
