Great old, grand old Pauillac. The most revered appellation in the Médoc felt more like it had gone back in time than perhaps any other area. The wines were generally very lean and precise – Merlot, again, suffered a fair bit up here and, with the wines usually Cabernet focussed anyway, it meant that these high percentages were pushed even higher.

2016 Bordeaux – Château Branaire Ducru, Château Pibran & Château Les Trois Croix

With their election over, and confidence in the future of La France restored it is back to business in Bordeaux this morning. Château Branaire Ducru has been released at £232.50 per case of 6 IB. Jane Anson in Decanter, gives it 95 points: ‘Always a supremely elegant, measured take on St-Julien that delivers in spades in 2016.
