2013 CHÂTEAU COUTET 1er Cru Classé Barsac
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

I was hoping for a dazzle from Coutet, but despite a slightly salty attack it's not enough to give it freshness, and it's missing a bit of delicacy. Good not great today. - L&S 91?

2013 ALTER EGO DE CHÂTEAU PALMER du Château Palmer Margaux
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

"The 2013 Alter Ego de Palmer is a blend of 46% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. It has a well-defined bouquet with quite vivacious, lush red and black fruit, hints of cassis and iodine permeating through. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity. This is a light Alter Ego, but quite tensile, though it is missing some persistency towards the finish." - Neal Martin 86-88

In Bond £395.00

2013 CHÂTEAU PALMER 3ème Cru Classé Margaux
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

"A blend of 49% Merlot and 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Palmer 2013 certainly has more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the Alter Ego. A little more opulent, there is a sense of plushness typical of Palmer with oodles of black cherries, cassis and blueberries - hints of dried violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. The acidity is nicely judged with a fine masculine, swarthy finish that shows more length than the Alter Ego. This is a good effort from the Palmer team - what you might call a "swish" Margaux in the making." - Neal Martin 90-92

In Bond £825.00

2013 CHÂTEAU CLERC MILON 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Good colour. Fruit is less expressive than in stablemate d'Armailhac, so oak is what shows most on the nose, but this remains quite a good rich mouthful, with a sort of Christmas cake plumminess significantly fuller than d'Armailhac and with everything in the right place. - L&S 89 - 90

In Bond £330.00

2013 CHÂTEAU D'ARMAILHAC 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

I tasted this at least three times during the primeurs week, and oddly least well at Mouton. Quite good solid weight Cabernet fruit, with acidity building toward the finish, but the fruit is still there and it remains quite rich. - L&S 88

In Bond £250.00

2013 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1er Cru Classé Pauillac
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

I tasted Mouton as usual once only, at the Château, and was left rather perplexed. 'A deep sustained colour, it is round and plump and rich on the palate, slowly drying as the oak takes hold. Feels very dry, with no real lift or distinction, as though it was been ironed out.' Now clearly this is more likely to be me or the sample as most other tasters seem to have found it to be one of the wines of the vintage. - L&S ? Read the others!

2013 PETIT MOUTON Pauillac Château Mouton Rothschild
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, case of 12

"The Le Petit Mouton has a huge majority of Cabernet Sauvignon at 93% - the highest percentage ever. The nose is quite floral and Margaux-like in style, simple but perfumed. The palate is crisp and structured on the entry with plenty of graphite-infused black fruit originating from the Cabernet, with a touch of dried blood towards the finish. This is a knockout wine from Philippe Dhalluin - real character and panache here." - Neal Martin 90-92

In Bond £750.00

2013 CHÂTEAU TALBOT 4ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

80% Cabernet - compared to the planting proportion of 65% in the vineyard. Supple and fresh, 'not very dense', as they admit, but quite floral and attactive as an early drinker. - L&S 87

In Bond £290.00

2013 CONNÉTABLE TALBOT du Château Talbot Saint Julien Château Talbot
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

"Sweet tobacco, mint, crushed flowers and anise lift from the glass in the 2013 Connetable de Talbot. Given its mid-weight structure, this silky, perfumed St. Julien appears best suited to near-term drinking." - Antonio Galloni 84-87

In Bond £150.00

2013 CHÂTEAU ANGÉLUS 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Structural and dense, with savoury ripe fruit, and with the acidity of the vintage too so that it feels a bit exaggerated and slightly hard work. Should round out with time and may be better than my note. - L&S 91

In Bond £1790.00

2013 CHÂTEAU PAVIE 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 17/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Like the comparison between Canon la Gaff and Mondotte, so Pavie soars above Bellevue Mondotte. Fresh and rich, but although dry it flows and feels digestible. Powerful and rich, and yes acid freshness concentrates it all to the point of painfulness, but it retains direction and will get there. 2024-2035+ - L&S 93+

In Bond £1790.00

2013 CHÂTEAU CLIMENS 1er Cru Classé Barsac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

"A greater diversity of lots this year than usual, ranging from delicate to unctuous, but the final blend should be terrific. An elegant, layered, harmonious wine with freshness. Drink: 2021-2031." - Jeannie Cho Lee 18.25

In Bond £429.00

2013 CARRUADES DE CHÂTEAU LAFITE Pauillac
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

"The Carruades de Lafite is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It has quite a floral bouquet with touches of dried violet petals infusing the crisp blackberry fruit, laced with cedar and a touch of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, starting with black fruit but gently moving to more red fruit towards the finish. There is not the usual persistency, but it has pleasing purity and approachability." - Neal Martin 88-90

2013 CHÂTEAU DUHART MILON ROTHSCHILD 4ème Cru Classé Pauillac
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Quite austere black fruit, plum and graphite, dark minerals and a good concentrated intensity. Very dry cherry finish lifted by acidity, but there's a sharp harmony here even if it is all quite lean. 2019-2026 - L&S 89 - 90

In Bond £520.00

2013 CHÂTEAU LAFITE 1er Cru Classé Pauillac Château Lafite Rothschild
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

98% Cabernet Sauvignon this year. After Duhart Milon Lafite shows, as one might hope, more weight, more richness. A suave dry oak-influenced dark floral and dark cherry and sloe fruit and a firm but densely-packed mid-palate. Graphite and plum. Fine tannins on the finish full of sharp, aromatic black fruit. All very taut and quite long. - L&S 92 - 93

In Bond £1625.00

2013 CHÂTEAU L'ÉVANGILE Pomerol Château L'Évangile
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

87% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 100% new wood. One might expect the 100% new wood to be very evident in a year like 2013, but in fact this wine has absorbed it with ease. Quite dark, but really quite rich. Impressive for its richness and depth of weighty fruit. All the same it has the freshness and vivacity of the vintage. Easy to hold in the mouth, it is supple and rounded, with puppyish charm, but the underlying power is there. Nevertheless to drink before the recent 'big' vintages. 2018-2028 - L&S 92+

In Bond £550.00

2013 CHÂTEAU LA CROIX SAINT GEORGES Pomerol Lea & Sandeman
Release date: 16/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Sweet and creamy, almost port-like fruit with hints of tawny (suggesting oxidaton), so perhaps the sample is tired. A bit weird. On this showing (sadly the only time I saw it), this is not one of Jean-Philippe's great successes, although the volume is good for the vintage. - L&S 86-87

In Bond £300.00

2013 CHÂTEAU DOISY DAËNE 2ème Cru Classé Barsac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Very delicate mix of Sauvignon 'smoke' and pure lemon cream. Very fresh and crystalline. Lovely purity. Superb. Creamy, mildly caramel and honey finish. - L&S 93

In Bond £295.00

2013 CHÂTEAU HAUT BAILLY Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Château Haut Bailly
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Edgy, herby fruit, and quite an aggressive texture, this is a tad disappointing today. Very punchy tannic finish. A second tasting was very similar - the are good bits but it still feels hollow of fruit savour compared to the structural density. 2016-2025 - L&S 87

In Bond £430.00

2013 CHÂTEAU GISCOURS 3ème Cru Classé Margaux
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Oak juice. Vanillin essence and crème patissière with cassis. Could turn out OK if fruit lasts the course. The vanillin does stay well on the finish. - L&S 88

In Bond £275.00

2013 CHÂTEAU CALON SÉGUR 3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. The style of the Capbern Gasqueton is here too, with focus, clarity and definition, but this is more sophisticated and richer, with a touch of real savoury, and even a bit of spice. Very fine liquid silk feel on palate, just edged with a tiny tannic astringency. Blackcurrant and damson edged with sloe. And length! Vincent Millet says the floral spiciness of the Cabernet comes from their clay soils. - L&S 91 - 92

In Bond £420.00

2013 CHÂTEAU CAPBERN GASQUETON Saint Estèphe PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Capbern has come from nowhere to be seriously popular with our customers in the space of four years, thanks to winemaker Vincent Millet, who is reponsible here as well as at Calon Ségur. Amazing colour depth. An honest, complete wine, with red and black fruit making a harmonious nose. Quite soft and silky with precise flavours. Really well done. Appetisingly gourmand. 2016-2022 - L&S 89

In Bond £125.00

2013 CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE 3ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 15/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

75% Cabernet sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. First tasting showed focused Cabernet fruit, not overly ripe, but pure and quite concentrated. A little dour, but getting there there. Later tasted again where it showed better - Lagrange's usual tendencey to being monolithic, but there's a sweet and textured cassis Cabernet middle with good weight and depth, even if no huge length. 2017-2025 - L&S 88 - 90

In Bond £250.00

2013 CHÂTEAU DOISY VÉDRINES 2ème Cru Classé Barsac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 14/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Foxy! Curves and sexy supple volupté. A Jessica Rabbit of a wine, vampish strutting richness and bouncy depth. Succulent with a strange saline length, it seems to be on springs. Huge fun. - L&S 93 - 94

In Bond £225.00

2013 CHÂTEAU RAUZAN SÉGLA 2ème Cru Classé Margaux Château Rauzan-Ségla
Release date: 11/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Moderately intense black-purple colour. Closed-in on the nose. Balanced palate with close weave texture. Even and balanced, but not expressive other than a sense of black mineral and a saline touch. Firm finish is long but tightens the screws, tannins closing in. - L&S 88+?

In Bond £365.00

2013 CHÂTEAU LYNCH BAGES 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 11/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Very classical Lynch with masses of black fruit, fresh and pure. It has not got the movement of a top vintage but the Lynch Bages generosity is here even if distinctiveness is limited. Supple and cool in its concentrated volume. The finish picks up the freshness and gives an impression of much more to come. It's just a bit dry to score higher now, but I'd expect this to train on, probably above the upper end of where it feels now. - L&S 89 - 91

In Bond £550.00

2013 CHÂTEAU DU TERTRE 5ème Cru Classé Margaux
Release date: 10/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Dough sort of nose, 'blueberry muffin'. Ripe but not overripe, smooth and quite full and dense. Well done so far. A bit blocky and dense as ever here. 2016-2023 - L&S 88

In Bond £205.00

2013 BLANC DE LYNCH BAGES Château Lynch Bages PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 10/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

They've done it again here - this rates as one of the most delicious whites from Bordeaux this year and frankly compared by price it stands out for value (always accepting that white Bordeaux is not synonymous with value in my mind). Lovely harmonious nose, fresh and full and crisp, with none of the awkward excessively green Sauvignon flavours that bedevil many of this year's whites, just sweet citrus and peel and a touch of tropical exoticism. Really nicely integrated wood spice and a very jolly fatness - great fun. - L&S 92

In Bond £120.00

2013 CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT 1er Cru Classé Sauternes
Release date: 7/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Rich and sleek, waxy, suave, full-bodied, a grand pommaded Lord in an immacualte dinner jacket. Du grand luxe! All as rich as can be but it holds it all together with immaculate style. When we taste this at Pichon, Christian says characterises 2013 as being, with 2003, 2005 and 2009, in the line of the 'fatties' - he thinks 2009 the fattest of all. He likened them to roly-poly babies with all their puppy-fat around their wrists and ankles. - L&S 93

In Bond £465.00

2013 CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 7/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Deep colour, raw black-curranty nose, quite a deep blackcurrant and black mineral palate. There's even a little impression of sweetness on the finish. Pure and dark. Slightly hard to gauge evolution but seems set fair. A second tasting confirmed the first and more; pure and frank with nice definition, also giving an impression of oak-structured tannin but this seemed correct in the context of the wine. 2019-25+ - L&S 90 - 91

In Bond £420.00

2013 CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE Blanc Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 7/4/2014

Harmonious and ripe nose with complex notes of wax, spice, baking aromas, dried fruit. Pretty darn good in this style, with lively acidity carrying the length. - L&S 92+
