2013 CHÂTEAU PICHON LALANDE 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

All about silky harmony. Not a big wine - may even be rather slight, but it is precise and all elegance. 90-91/100 L&S

In Bond £635.00

2013 RÉSERVE DE LA COMTESSE Pauillac
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

The blend for Pichon Lalande’s second wine wasn’t as drastic as that for the grand vin - 6% Merlot was joined by 8% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot - but this is another comparative success, with soft, leafy flavours, prominent oak and bright acidity. 2018-24 92 Tim Atkin MW, wwwtimatkin.com

2013 CHÂTEAU DUCRU BEAUCAILLOU 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Lacy harmonious nose. Attack is not huge, but it is fullish, suave, straight, spicy with tobacco, fat complex and integrated. Good energy and liveliness at the finish too. This will make a good bottle - the acidity is very present, but it is not separate or difficult, and there is a tobaccoey sweetness of flavour in the dryness of structure. 92+ L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LALANDE BORIE Saint Julien
Release date: 6/5/2014

2013 LA CROIX DE BEAUCAILLOU du Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint Julien
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

This is good. Lightweight, arguably, but good weave of fat and fibres, mildly spicy and with good warmth and flow and energy. Stays well and finishes on tangy fruit tannins. 89/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU BEAUSÉJOUR DUFFAU LAGAROSSE 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

88% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Broader and riper yet than the Pavie Macquin, less on the high-toned fruit, more depth and richness, and bit on a bomb, but it's a very good bomb, and again the acidity on the finish has the really positive effect of pushing the fruit to the fore. All the lovely aromatics of all the wines in this Nicolas Thienpont stable. 2018-2030+ 91+ L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU BERLIQUET Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 6/5/2014

Bramble and black cherry the nose is quite fresh. There is mix of red and black fruits on the palate freshness yet some sweetness with at the back a bright red fruited character. 2015-2025. 86-89 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk

2013 CHÂTEAU LARCIS DUCASSE Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Like all Nicolas Thienpont's wines this year, this is extremely impressive. Creamy fruit and delicacy. Not quite the juice and floral aromatics of some of his junior wines (Puygueraud, Trimoulet), but then this has much more weight and solidity to it, and in the end the acidity does bring out the fruit on the finish which is long and subtle. 2019-2026 91 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU PAVIE MACQUIN Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 6/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Very sophisticated attack with ripe fruit flavours and a touch of sweet oak amplifying the best bits of the cassis and rounding it. Good blackcurranty freshness and almost power - certainly drive in the good balance and length. 91 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU HAUT BERGEY Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 5/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Tasted twice and on neither time did it present as being very serious, but it does have a crowd-pleasing smooth richness and a reasonably full dark fruit. 2015-2022. 87-88/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LASCOMBES 2ème Cru Classé Margaux Château Lascombes
Release date: 5/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Inky deep black colour. This has little in the way of relief in the flavours; all dense and in one piece, the tannins give thickness, but it is no fun at all. 2020-2025? 84 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LE DÔME Saint Emilion
Release date: 5/5/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

(80 Cabernet Franc, 20 Merlot) 12.9% alcohol. Great balance and exceptional freshness, this is a superb, dense, bold and impactful wine with considerable depth and pristine tannins. The remarkable thing is it is all so bright, lifted and refreshing. It will age gracefully showing us a different mood of the great Le Dôme. Apparently, 2013 is not a Cabernet Franc year – this wine is the exception which proves the rule. 18+ Matthew Jukes

65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Deep bright purple colour. Feels quite full from the mass of very fine tannins. Pure and linear cassis and faint aroma of wood. Tannins build and thare's a bit of coal-like blackcurrant. Elegant to the end. 2020-2030+ 92/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU L'ÉGLISE CLINET Pomerol PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 30/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

Denis Durantou, always interesting to listen to, was keen to say that this year it was the good weather in July which made the wine ('Juillet à fait le moût'). 'Ripe grapes can be acid too. It's no use waiting for them not to be'. July was the hottest for 15 years, so by September the grapes were ripe even if they were acid, the tannins were ripe even though the acidity was high. This year Denis' wines were naturally 13-13.5%. While other were waiting, looking for the sweetness and low acid of some recent vintages, he was happy to make wines with this balance. And it works for him! More serious depth and richness than the Petite Église, more structure too, but there's a good deep black fruit and spice and savour too. A touch of dark chocolate, and then the acidity on the finish lifts it all, mouthwatering, hard not to swallow. A lovely balance. Denis goes on to say 'astringency should be part of the culture of wine, sugar and sweetness is vulgar and not sophisticated'. 93 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LA VIOLETTE Pomerol
Release date: 30/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

The La Violette has a voluptuous, decadent bouquet that pays little heed to the limitations of the growing season - everything that you expect from the late Catherine Père-Vergé's luxurious cru. I actually like the palate more than the last two vintages, the tannins filigree and the texture silky smooth with a gentle, seductive and poised finish. Gorgeous. Tasted April 2014. 92-94/100 Neal Martin, www.erobertparker.com

2013 CHÂTEAU LE GAY Pomerol
Release date: 30/4/2014

2013 VIEUX CHÂTEAU CERTAN Pomerol
Release date: 30/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

The weather wasn't with us', said Guillaume Thienpont, explaining that the Cabernet Franc was just not good enough this year. They have made only a thousand cases of Grand Vin, with two thirds of the crop going to the second wine. Perfumed floral and red fruit nose, palate smooth and light with a slight hardening of acidity. The signature silky elegance without the power and richness, and without the characteristic Cabernet Franc fruit flavours either. They really waited for as much ripeness as they could get, despite the pressure of the developing botrytis, because, as Guillaume put it, 'vegetal flavours are not acceptable these days', but then had to be very gentle with extraction. 2016-2021 89 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU PAPE CLEMENT Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Château Pape Clement
Release date: 29/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

The perils of Primeurs tastings illustrated: at a négociant's at the beginning of the week, it showed nothing more than creamy vanillin fruit with rather ersatz flavours more of oak than anything else. The fruit might have been in hiding, but it was quite dry too. Later in the week at the Pessac-Léognan tasting, it surprised by its slightness for a wine from this property, but this came over as a positive thing. Nicely composed cake dough sort of flavours, pretty good balance, in fact really not bad even if there was still no real lift to the fruit. 87-90/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU GRUAUD LAROSE 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 29/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. There's a sort of caramel sweetness in the cherry and blackcurrant fruit, reasonable weight and presence, just tightens a little hairily on the finish, but enjoyable. Drink 2018-2026 89-90/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE LAS CASES 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien Château Leoville Las Cases PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 29/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

In the same sort of line as the Clos du Marquis, with a purer, more lifted fruit on the nose, more aromatically 'pointed'. More graphite and pencil shavings too. Palate rich but not too rich, suave volume with finest tannins, but really just a weighty, supple silk feel, the tannins are just on the edge. Fruit is reserved, but the volume is here. Blackcurrant, spice, damsons, complex and intertwined. - really well done. The finish has more tannin, but it is mouthwatering rather than drying. 93+ L&S

2013 CLOS DU MARQUIS Saint Julien PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 29/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Lovely sustained ruby-purple. Bright and pure and aromatically sophisticated fruit with soft ripe berry flavours. Really a very sophisticated wine. Palate shows oak spice. Silky supple coolly expressed concentrated black fruit. The acidity is strong on the finish, but it gives good definition and mouthwatering succulence rather than dryness. 90-91/100 L&S

2013 SARGET DE GRUAUD LAROSE du Château Gruaud Larose Saint Julien
Release date: 29/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

The Sarget de Gruaud Larose, a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, Cabernet Franc 6% and 7% Petit Verdot, has a light nose with blackcurrant and briary: moderate vigour and delineation, perhaps missing a little vigour. The palate is light on the entry with tart red fruit, quite high acidity and a pointed finish. 83-85 Neal Martin, www.erobertparker.com

Nice liquid-fresh 'real wine' style, good, if not especially massive, consistency, a dry and classic claret elegance. Montlandrie cannot quite claim to have the same hedonistic style of stablemates Chenade and Cruzelles this year. Correct but a little austere. Taut and vibrant fruit with a nice saline savouriness, but a little rugged. Quite long. 2016-2023 87 L&S

From Denis Durantou, this pure Merlot picked on 28 and 29 September has a delicate, floral bouquet with perfumed violet scents emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded and soft tannins. 2013 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot. Reasonably deep purple. Crunchy fruit - there is a similarity to stablemate Langoa, but Léoville has a coarser grain, a texture of tapestry, a more interesting depth, spicy red and black fruit, it has some mineral depth and that very Barton savour which comes across as very 'grand' - but in miniature. It is slightly longer-term but the balance remains attractive and it is long too. 2020-2030. 91-92/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU SAINT PIERRE 4ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc. Quite a classy and concentrated Cabernet fruit, showing a round, blunt weight, supple with fine tannins. Slightly unexpressive, as though the top note is muffled, but feels all here, and the ripe spiced black fruit goes on well on the finish. 88-89/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU CLINET Pomerol
Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

2013 CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE Pomerol
Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Bright ruby-purple. Richer compared to the Duo (second wine), with a definite touch of nobility in the aromas. Tannins build, but although drying are not really aggressive, and the pretty blackcurrant and blueberry fruit stays well. Long, especially for the vintage. Jean-Michel Laporte seems (justifiably) pleased with this and told us that 2013 was in fact much more homogenous thoughout the vineyard than 2012 - only 12% has gone to the second wine, with 88% in the Grand Vin. They made 30hl/ha, and the clusters were well aerated. 'We did have botrytis, but when we had to harvest because of the botrytis, we were harvesting because the grapes were ripe too.' He did not want to extract aggressively, but was able to do long 'cuvaison' with some vats gently infusing for up to 35 days. Since 2010 J-M has reduced the new oak to 65%, but he felt no reason to reduce it more this year and it is true that the wine seems to have absorbed it effortlessly. 2017-2026 91 L&S

Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Dark and dumb with a little spice on the nose. Attack is again dense and fine, furred with tannins full of black fruit flavour and a kind of enlivening, dancing acidity. Lots of fruit and savour depth. Mouthcoating, it remains on the border of pleasant austerity. The finish is full of blueberry fruit, dry and savoury. A wine with serious depth for the medium to long-term. 2022-2035 93++? L&S

Release date: 28/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

53% Cabernet Franc, 47% Merlot. 'In some years Petit Cheval is dangerously close to The Grand Vin in quality, but not this year', says Kies van Leuwen, emphasizing how well they think they have done with the selection. There's a freshness here which has nothing to do with unripeness. More richness of tannin and a racy saline minerality and liveliness, all expressed though broad plum and tight damson fruit, long and fine and very attractive. 2020-2035+ 93 L&S

There is no Quinault l'Enclos this year as it was hailed completely, so the tasting at Cheval Blanc kicks off with the Petit Cheval. 79% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc. 60% new wood. They tried not to force the extraction to retain 'balance and elegance', says Kies van Leuwen. Light and bright in aroma, it actually has good weight, the expression very cool, silky textured, full. 2013 CHÂTEAU LANGOA BARTON 3ème Cru Classé Saint Julien
Release date: 25/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Not very concentrated, quite high-toned floral fruit, Nicely lifted and surprisingly supple and all of a piece. Fresh and bright and succulent, the acidity does come up on the finish, but it lifts the fruit with it. Definitely an interesting drink for five years' time or so. 2017-2024 89-90/100 L&S

2013 DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER Blanc Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 25/4/2014

Catty, box-hedge nose, then fat on the palate but sluggish. I'm not really enjoying this this year. 88 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION 1er Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Rich. Much weightier and with more depth than the Mission. Not truly profound, but the sort of wine nevertheless which seems to have more to give, depths to plumb. Is this the first wine this year with layers and a sense of three dimensions? Finishes very black fruit and sloes. Still pretty austere. 92/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT BRION Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Dry, ripe dark fruit, good weight, just a ghost of sweetness, but mostly quite dry and serious. A structured wine. One can see this making an '04 styled wine, good flavour depth and structural austerity. Raspberry top-notes. 91+ L&S

2013 LA CHAPELLE DE LA MISSION Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Darker, more oak-influenced aromas on the nose, quite tangy freshness leading to a fairly astringent finish as the acidity kicks in. 87/100 L&S

2013 LE CLARENCE DE HAUT BRION Pessac-Léognan Château Haut Brion
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Somehow a bit of a plain Jane; good volume, not much aromatic distinction. Red and black fruit on the palate, all 'just' ripe. Feels like it will be 'fine' but it is not clear where the interest is going to come from. 87/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU GRAND MAYNE Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

2013 CHÂTEAU QUINTUS Grand Cru Saint Emilion
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, case of 12

(80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) A plush nose, with stunning density, is followed but a controlled delivery of power and fruit. Nothing is forced or urgent. The whole package is long, smooth and even and there is a gradual crescendo of flavour throughout. Very careful use of oak, too. I even prefer this to the 2012 because it is so honed and elegant. 17.5+ Matthew Jukes

2013 LE DRAGON DE QUINTUS Grand Cru Saint Emilion
Release date: 24/4/2014

Not a massive wine, but bright and harmonious, edged with fresh raspberry and a little comforting depth. Acidity brightens the finish. Pretty enough. 87/100 L&S

2013 LA CLARTÉ DE HAUT BRION Graves
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

61% Sémillon, 39% Sauvignon Blanc. Stunning nose – wax, lemon, vanilla and fresh herbs. Charming texture, and a lightness of body that fits into the balance well. Modest length, but good concentration and potential for development. (RH) Drink 2015-2020 17+ L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION Blanc Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

A high (66%) proportion of Sauvignon. Very ripe with a touch of honeyed sweetness. Spicy oak and spicy fruit, with a driving core of lemony acidity, it remains very compact and linear on the acidity. 93/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT BRION BLANC Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Release date: 24/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 6

Very linear and forceful with eye-watering intensity and acidity backing up a spicy middle. Very concentrated and compact with tight lemon, it seemed more closed and embryonic to me than others seem to have found it. 91+? L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU GRAND PUY LACOSTE 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 23/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Again (like Haut Batailley) quite a sweet oak overlay, the fruit is more discreet, and the whole more structured and tannic. Dry and quite serious underneath, it has a sweet, lightly spicy edge, good refreshing balance and is generous too. Good Cabernet fruit and spice, and good flow too. 91/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU HAUT BATAILLEY 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 23/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Very sweet fat supple fruit. An oaky sweet overlay, but the fruit holds this really well. Round and almost opulent. Silky supple berry fruit with a warm and generous heart. Tightens on the finish, it may need just a little time. 2019-2026 90/100 L&S

2013 CHÂTEAU LAFON-ROCHET 4ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe
Release date: 23/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

First nose is mostly oak. Good fresh creamy texture; very silky, but although the tannins build and the structure seems to be here, the fruit is reticent. A bit monolithic and quite tight on the finish. 87-88/100 L&S

In Bond £235.00

2013 CLOS DE L'ORATOIRE Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
Release date: 23/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

From the one tasting this seems to be a rare miss for Clos de l'O. In 'prise de bois', so may recover, but tastes gripped, of charcoal and caramel, a touch of sweetness overwhelmed by bitter dryness. 85 L&S

2013 PAVILLON ROUGE du Château Margaux Château Margaux
Release date: 22/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

The Pavillon Rouge consists of just 21% of the harvest - the smallest proportion ever since much is not deselected into the third wine or sold off. It has a rather broody bouquet the demands some encouragement, but eventually reveals blackberry, cold stone and just a touch of violet. Indeed, the floral component comes through strongly with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with good acidity and tension. There is perhaps a little more coarseness compared to recent vintages on the entry, although the finish is cohesive and with a delicate touch of black pepper. 89-91 Neal Martin, www.erobertparker.com

2013 CHÂTEAU MEYNEY Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Saint Estèphe PRIMEUR FAVOURITES
Release date: 22/4/2014
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

Brightly-scented and well-formed defined fruit purity. Not heavy but well done. Energy and richly oaky classicism. Good direction and flow, crunchy texture. If the acidity shines a touch it is only to lift the fruit even more. Really nice line and length. Bravo! Top stuff for the vintage. 2016-2024 89-90/100 L&S

In Bond £185.00

2013 CHÂTEAU FIGEAC 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion
75cl bottles, wood case of 12

There was a lot of talk about Figeac this year, new regime here, still Manoncourt-owned but there has been a putsch as far as the management is concerned. As usual the high Cabernet Sauvignon content on their gravel soils (which are rare at the top end of the Saint Emilion classification) make it hard to judge amongst its peers. Attractively dry, it still seems a little blocky, and although harmonious one can for the moment see this being fine but not amazing. 89-90 L&S
