The return of the ever popular Lea and Sandeman Bordeaux, and better than ever in the fabulous 2005 vintage. Deep colour, bursting with ripe fruit, rich but gentle tannins and great length, this is far from being just another ordinary claret. This wine justifiably carries the Lea and Sandeman label. The Lea & Sandeman 2005 Bordeaux from Renaud Lecoq is a pure Merlot red from one of the great Bordeaux vintages in recent years, which goes some way to explaining quite why this classic modern claret is full of such juicy cherry and blackcurrant flavours, skilfully leavened with undertones of vanilla oak. Ready for the Christmas turkey, it will happily keep for three or four more Christmases yet, especially if you buy by the (very reasonably priced at £6.95/ bottle) case. I rarely think of Bordeaux as a source of decent everyday wines but there are exceptions. BBR'S Good Ordinary Claret is exemplary at the price, but I was bowled over by Lea and Sandeman's own-label Bordeaux 2005. A claret in the modern idiom in that it doesn't try to hide its fairly exemplary fruit but has classic character nevertheless.Tom Dooley, The Field (Jul 2008)
