2008 MENCIA Ribeiro Bodegas Docampo

Grapes: Mencia  Origin: Spain, Ribeiro
Lea & Sandeman review
Traditionally the indigenous Mencia grape produces wines which are light and fragrant, not unlike a Beaujolais or Pinot Noir, and best drunk in the region. This is a lovely example, beautifully made, wonderfully fresh and very, very drinkable even under the grey skies of England.

Aromatic and lingering raspberry fruit from this fashionable grape native to north-west Spain.

Aromatic: raspberry red fruit, slightly herbaceous but fully ripe. A little cedary. Plenty of light fresh spice. Wonderfully juicy, mouthfilling fruit but also a fine tannin/acid structure and density, making it such a whole wine. Lingering pure-fruited finish and then a hint of something savoury at the very end. Delicious. GV   17

Bodegas Docampo

This family run bodega in Ribeiro was founded in 1928, but has only been bottling their own wines since 1988. With only five hectares of vines they very much specialise in indigenous grape varieties, notably Treixadura and Torrontes.
