Adega Pena das Donas

The Ribera Sacra is an ancient land of valleys and monasteries, but the DO was only created in 1996, and this is the only Galician region which specialises in red wines, notably from the Mencia grape, as well as making beautifully crafted whites from Godello. Pena das Donas is a relatively new estate, although the five hectares of vineyards they have acquired on the incredibly steep, terraced banks of the meandering River Sil are between eighty and one hundred years old. These are among the best Godello and Mencia wines we have tasted, so pure and precise in their execution, making them truly world class.

Pena das Donas is a new estate in the high risk, high reward DO of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia where the steepness of the vineyards makes Sonoma’s Jackass Hill Vineyard look like a pool table. Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com
