Domaine François Raquillet

France, Burgundy

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1984, and records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s. With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. The 2014 vintage is the first to be made in the newly kitted out cuverie, and it was a pleasure to be one of the first to taste in his new tasting room, which was the family sitting room for our last visit! Francois explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style- combined with good mid-palate weight - and is as evident as ever in these top-notch 2014s although this year there is a pleasing added feeling of flesh, delicious.

Other reviews and comments
(of the 2012s) I have a lot of time for the consistently under-rated Pinot Noirs from Mercurey. The three wines I tasted from Francois Raquillet were all outstanding examples that come highly recommended.
