Domaine de Courcel
The other great domaine of Pommard, and three great expressions of the terroir of Pommard, yet a very different style to the Clos des Épeneaux of Comte Armand. Yves Confuron, the régisseur, describes the difference between the two top wines by saying that the Grand Clos is 'terreux' while the Rugiens is 'aérien'.

2006 POMMARD 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots Domaine de Courcel
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Again a surprising lightness (especially after the massiveness of the 2005, but all things are relative - this is a big Pommard) and mineral drive. Firm and fine tannins supporting a dense sappy fruit, which stays on, juicy and long. Very successful, playing to the character of the vintage.

2007 POMMARD 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots Domaine de Courcel
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Rich nose, damask rose and deep red fruit, opulent palate, muscular even. Fleshy with fine tannins. Pure and long, just a little tight on the finish at present.

2007 POMMARD 1er Cru Rugiens Domaine de Courcel
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Full, intense, wiry, mineral-structured, much more so than the Epenots, verging on bony, and then fills out finishes suavely on developing plum fruit.
