Domaine François Lumpp
François and Isabelle Lumpp own this impeccable 16 hectare estate in Givry, a region which is so often over looked by Burgundy lovers and yet which is capable of producing wines of exceptional quality as well as value. François is a passionate viticulturalist and places great emphasis on making the wine in the vineyard. He aims to pick at 'just ripe' rather than into overripe, and wants to make bright wines which are developed rather than masked by their time in barrel. Making the best wines in Givry, by some stretch, if he were in any other part of Burgundy he would be heralded as a super-star.

Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy France
Supple, full, lovely texture, expressive blackberry fruit, a nice dryness keeps it fresh. For this vineyard this is a big, vinous, long wine.
Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy France
Paler, greener tints than the village wine. A racier look, and this is borne out - mineral, crystal clarity, a touch of citrus in the form of a scent of grapefruit peel, a touch of spice from the oak, great tangy length.
Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy France
Taut and bright Pinot with plenty of fruit and minerality and a long finish.
Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy France
Taut and fresh, while at the same time broad-shouldered, with cherry and rich undergrowth and humus complexity. It has a grown-upness about it, like a powerful Volnay. Francois is very excited about this vineyard, calling it a 'tres grand terroir'.
Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy France
This was the last to finish its malo, so will not be bottled before March (and will not be shown at our London tasting). Black, Harmonious red and black fruit nose. Entry of silky fruit and a sturdy framework ('charpente') behind. Tannic super-black polished expression. Very concentrated and long. Really pretty astonishing. It is 14%, after being hailed twice, and the yield was 'normal' despite careful cutting out of damaged bunches.
