Domaine Nicolas Rossignol
Nicolas Rossignol is a new superstar in the village of Volnay, making deeply coloured flavourful wines from his own vines and from the fruit of the family vineyard, where the wines were in the past labelled 'Rossignol-Jeanniard'. He has now agreed with his family that he buys all the fruit, and so the wines are now labelled very similarly, either with or without the word 'domaine'. Since these are all vineyards under his sole control thoughout the year, it really does not make any difference which is which. The character of each site shows through all the wines, but perhaps especially in the beautifully balanced Volnays, which incline to a very bright, transparent, incisive style.

Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Lovely fresh Pinot nose, followed by bright, crisp fruit on the palate, nicely textured giving an elegant and refreshing finish.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
This is a gorgeous ripe pinot with crisp fruit and silky texture. Very focussed and supple with lovely balance it drinks so well immediately but will evolve well over three years or so.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Nicolas' parcel of very old vines at the bottom of the slope in Pommard. very precise, very juicy, promises much but malo still only half-complete so hard to assess the final outcome.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Such a different style to the Clos des Mouches, but I like it no less. Oaky, backward, big black fruits, real depth and length on harmonious baritone notes.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
A full bodied and masculine version of Savigny with a broad shouldered finish.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Although Nicolas' Lavieres was good this year, this Fourneaux completely overshadows it. Much more sap and personality, much more serious - and he treats it accordingly, with 40% new wood. Rich, straight, long.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Nicolas remarked that this year the best bit of this was the youngest vines. Rich and powerful with a good liveliness, and quite a distinct tannic structure. Since Santenots usually yields a wine with a fair amount of concentration, it is one of the few where he added no whole bunches.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
When it came to harvesting the Chevrets, Nicolas was expecting to fill two cuves, but only got enough to fill one - as a result the proportion of whole bunches ended up being rather higher than he really intended. He is very pleased with the result - 'very close to 2005', richness and chewiness, real depth to the dark fruit flavours, still juicy and precise. Long and very successful.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
50% whole bunch fermentation, even so its the supple, fresh, sweet -edged style of this attractive vineyard. Sweetness and lift, with good definition.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
When I tasted this had not been finally assembled - there's a cuve of old vines which give it its finesse. This cuvée alone was powerful, with a lovely depth and length, and a sweet, very slightly feral middle. Very vinous, long and 'massif'.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
Very mineral and aërien, yet with surprising weight and presence on the palate and lots of superfine tannin, fresh and pebbly minerals. Long pure finish.
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
This vineyard, named after the 'ronce' or bramble, and on a terrain of broken rock, normally produces a powerfully tannic wine which needs no structural help in the vinication, but in 2009 Nicolas could not resist putting in some of the whole bunches as they were some of the best looking even of this exceptional year. So this has 30% whole bunches, and the result is delightful - very fresh, complex wild black (blueberry, blackberry) fruit and a frame... (more info)
Côte d'Or Burgundy France
The Chevrets style of rich velvetiness, a denser texture than the Clos des Angles, for example. Nicolas gave this 50% new wood, which this dense fruit simply absorbs with out a sign. Serous, long.
