Le Macchiole
Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. With 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellai's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole. All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide.

Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
The 2009 version of Le Macchiole's Bolgheri Rosso is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Upfront and ripe this full-bodied, yet remarkably elegant wine drinks beautifully already having been aged in a combination of cement tanks and neutral oak. You would have to pay a lot more in Bordeaux to get this level of quality and satisfaction.

This spectacular Chardonnay and Sauvignon blend has to be Tuscany's best white wine by a mile and rivals the better known Cervaro as one of Italy's greatest whites, at a two thirds of the price. Made only in miniscule qauantities.

Paleo 2005 (100% Cabernet Franc) offers delicious mid-term drinking and is really lovely to drink right now. Ripe and full bodied, with an uplifting acidity that keeps it so very drinkable this is as good as many a claret at twice the price. Parker reckons it is the estate's best wine in the vintage, and he is probably right.
Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
Perhpas less flattering than either the upfront 2005 or the immensely fine 2007, this vintage simply needs more time in bottle to express itself. I don't doubt that this will make for a very fine Paleo.
Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
The Paleo 2007 is a beautifully expressive wine, packed with aromatic fruit, concentrated and rich with silky tannins and impressive length. Cabernnet Franc at its best with tremendous ploish and lift.

Le Macchiole's latest release of Paleo is a wonderfully expressive and elegant example of Cabernet Franc. This is not a wine of massive structure and new oak, rather it is vibrant and lively with tremendous length. While it will drink relatively young, it will certainly go the long haul for a decade or two.
Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
One of the lighter vintages od Scrio Syrah, and yet still impressive with notes of mint, chocolate and dark fruit.
Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
Hugely impressive, and the first vintage in shich Cinzia has cut back on the new oak so that the Syrah is altogether more expressive.
Bolgheri Tuscany Italy
Tasting Messorio in its youth it is difficult not to be seduced by its intensely powerful rich, sweet fruit and new oak, all of which needs time to come together. However the 2007 is immediately striking for its elegance too, which is largely as a result of oak selection and shorter time in barrel, as well as an even more rigid selection of fruit in the vineyard. Deservedly sought after and highly priced, but still a lot less than the other famous... (more info)
