Luigi Maffini
Luigi Maffini's vineyards are on the coast of Campania, south of Naples, across the bay from Positano, and planted with the local grape varieties of Fiano and Aglianico. We first met Luigi Maffini at Vinitaly at least ten years ago, and he was quite plainly making some of the best and truest wines from Campania as he is today. However, in spite of asking and having tasted his wines every year since, this is the first time that he has been in a position to sell us his wines. They are all well worth trying.

2009 DENAZZANO Rosato Luigi Maffini

This is a full-bodied 'rosato' made from the free run juice of Aglianico grapes, which in spite of having had no skin contact at all is remarkably deep in colour. Packed with red fruits, crisp tannins and a fabulous finish. This would be brilliant with char-grilled fish and meats and ideal for lunch on a cold English beach mid-summer. Perhaps more in the line of a lighter bodied red wine for chilling than a rosé.

2009 KLEOS Aglianico Luigi Maffini

Superbly textured and full bodied Aglianico. This vintage has been given a shorter period of skin contact and a relatively short period in used oak barrels so as to preserve all of its juicy and crunchy fruit. The tannins are ripe and very fine giving it great length and making it a very exciting wine for drinking with food.

Pietraincatenata translates as 'stones in chains' after the local name of the rock formation above the vineyard where this wine comes from. This is a later picked Fiano which spends eight months in new oak, from a vineyard with a more limestone based soil, and more concentrated and intense than the Kratos. Maffini's top red wine is made from low yielding Aglianico from a single block of older vines. The wine is aged for eighteen months in barrels, of which fifty-five percent are new, and the kept in bottle eighteen months before release. The result is a much more complex, spicy, more tannic and tighter style but with fantastic persistence and length - the signs of a great wines for ageing a few more years. Stunning.
