CHÂTEAU LYNCH MOUSSAS

1996 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification 5ème Cru Classé

The 1996 Lynch-Moussas is still surprisingly deep in colour, quite limpid, with little sign of its age. The bouquet is classic ‘old school’ Pauillac with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit, touches of cold black tea and mahogany bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with an East Asian-tinged opening, hoisin and a pinch of white pepper. This displays better than expected substance and cohesion, lightly spiced on its finely-tuned and quite vigorous finish. The 1996 is drinking perfectly now and, on this showing, should give another 12-15 years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

This is unquestionably the finest wine I have ever tasted from this estate. Assuming my notes are accurate, the 1996 Lynch Moussas is one of the major sleepers of the vintage. This wine, which has long been uninspiringly made, seemed to be turning the corner in 1995, but the 1996 looks to be a major breakthrough. The wine's opaque black-purple colour is followed by sweet liquorice and cassis aromas along with subtle toasty oak. The wine is dense, surprisingly sweet and supple for a 1996, with medium to full body, and loads of extract and richness. Unfortunately, this was one of a handful of wines that I was only able to taste once, so I will be looking forward to retasting it to see if it is truly this special. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. A sleeper. Rating: 89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Mar 2005)

A very good example of this under-achieving estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this seductive Lynch-Moussas should drink well at a young age. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. Drinking range: 2004 - 2012 Rating: 86 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 1999)
