The nose is rich but overlaying the fruit are attractive floral fragrances, violets and pine needles. The mix of black fruits, bramble and sloe give weight to the palate, dark chocolate giving a richer feel towards the back. I under-estimated this Dow when it was first released. It has a deeper in colour than the Fonseca, the Dow 2000 has a lifted nose with fruitcake, damson, black plum, a touch of nail varnish and apricots. The more that you inhale its perfume the more complex it seems. The palate is full-bodied, quite spicy on the entry but very austere in the middle. Firm tannins, robust, a touch of dryness towards the earthy finish. Nice persistency on the finish, those peppery motes flittering about the mouth. Drink 2020-2050+ Tasted May 2009. An opaque blue/purple color (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030. Saturated bright ruby. Primary, backward aromas of cassis, redcurrant, licorice, minerals, bitter chocolate and spices. Penetrating, structured and powerful. Not hugely sweet but boasts superb flavor definition and impressive extract. A very unevolved port that's best today on the expanding finish, which features notes of cassis, violet, dark chocolate and peaty earth and terrific grip and thrust. Dow

Now owned by the Symington Family, Dow had an unusual beginning as in 1798 Portuguese merchant Bruno da Silva left Portugal and travelled to England, importing his wine over to sell. In 1862, Bruno's son John da Silva created a partnership with Frederick William Cosens and formed Silva & Cosens. The firm expanded and were eventually joined by another partner, George Acheson Warre. The company continued to thrive, and in 1877 merged with yet another port company, Dow & Co, headed by James Ramsey Dow. Silva & Cosens took on the highly respected Dow name, and simply traded under Dow & Co.
