Grapes Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification 5ème Cru Classé
ABV 13%

Very deep colour, as one might expect, rich and fruit-cakey, dense and quite closed, but it has the fat and the richness. Intense, but like a plump cushion, the tannins civilised and stressing the finesse and the fatness of the cassis fruit, staying well on the long finish. L&S (Mar 2005)

The 2001 Lynch-Bages has a complex bouquet, well defined with a mélange of red and black fruit mixed with freshly rolled tobacco, sage and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It's sweet and candied with veins of orange peel and hints of sloes and fig towards the finish. I appreciate the harmony here, plus the persistence. Very fine, though on this occasion, it is just pipped by its millennial counterpart. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château. Drinking range: 2021 - 2038 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2023)

Soft curl of smoke, the beginnings of tertiary notes , this is showing some evolution at 20 years old, as does the slight sediment that has formed in the bottle. Tobaocco smoke, saffran, brambled fruits, melted tannins. An elegant 2001 and one that I would suggest beginning to drink. It will continue at this level for a few decades but will not improve much from here. 65% new oak. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2022)

The predominately black plum gives the nose a fleshy fatness and this supple richness is very much in evidence on the start of the palate. The rich fruit and rounded tannins are balanced to some extent by the underlying freshness hints of red cherry and bilberry. The fruit lasts well on the finish. 2011-22 Rating: 92 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Château Lynch Bages

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
