Pol's newly released 2002 Vintage Blanc de Blancs has been getting rave reviews and it's not surprising. It is still a baby though - ideally buy to lay down for a good few years. L&S (Nov 2012)

Pale gold. Intense, mineral-dominated aromas of candied citrus fruits, pear, anise, smoky lees and chamomile, plus a sexy floral nuance and a hint of sweet butter. Palate-staining orchard and citrus fruit flavors show outstanding depth and energy, picking up chalky mineral and spice notes with air. Strikingly concentrated and precise wine with strong finishing punch and noteworthy persistence. This concentrated, deftly balanced Champagne is built for a long, graceful evolution. Rating: 95 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2013)

100% Chardonnay. Lively, very direct nose. More crisp on the nose than the regular Pol 2002. And on the palate. Quite tight and youthful. Almost slimline. Rather a strange combination between the richness of 2002 and the minerality of a Blanc de Blancs. Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2013)

White flowers, lemon, slate and chamomile are some of the notes that burst from the glass in Pol Roger’s 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Extra Cuvee de Reserve. A bright, tightly coiled wine, the 2002 comes across as quite fresh and vibrant, especially within the context of the year. Sweet floral and minty notes run through the precise, crystalline finish. Although the 2002 is absolutely delicious today, I am intrigued to see how it might age. It is utterly brilliant today 2012-2022. Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2013)

Champagne Pol Roger

Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
