TASSINAIA

2004 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Merlot, Sangiovese, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

Possibly the best Tassinaia that has been produced to date, this Cabernet, Sangiovese and Merlot blend is immensely elegant, finely structured (with beautifully restrained oak) and so much better than many of the big named Tuscan brands selling at twice the price. Ripe fruit, with soft, chewy tannins and very impressive length this is not unlike a top Saint Julien. Almost exceptional. L&S (Oct 2007)

Made from a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, plus 40 per cent Sangiovese, aged in Allier oak for 14 months. Clear deep but not overextracted ruby colour, lovely fruit aromas and flavours of blackberries and cherries, almost a Burgundian character. Lithe, elegant and with discreet oak. Not cheap but still excellent value, costing far less than some overrated, more publicised Super-Tuscans. Rating: 17.5/20 Michael Edwards (Jul 2009)

Drink 2008-13 40% Sangiovese, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Sweet and yet fresh too - mild and appealing. Seems quite forward - the fruit is very soft and evolved. You could drink this already. A certain ripe Merlot ingredient is very obvious.14% Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2009)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
