BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2004 Vigna Fontelontano Riserva Collemattoni

Grapes Sangiovese
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
Classification Riserva
ABV 15.5%

This is blockbuster Brunello, with ripe, heady fruit, rich and glossy tannins and a tremendous finish that with more time in bottle will evolve into an extraordinary wine. The nose reflects all the warmth of the soil and ripe fruit, complex on the palate, with notes of steeped fruit and distictive 'terroir' from the mineral rich soil of this vineyard. L&S (Feb 2010)

There's so much milk chocolate and ripe fruit on the nose in this full-bodied red, with loads more ripe fruit and toasty oak on the palate, but it all finishes in a subtle and beautiful way. Long and amazing. Best after 2011. Rating: 97 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Jun 2010)

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Fontelontano is a selection from a vineyard in Sant'Angelo in Colle. Sadly the 2004 Fontelontano comes across as big, rich and excessively heavy. The wine's richness and concentration have been achieved with a significant loss of elegance and varietal character. Drinking range: 2013 - 2020 Rating: 88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2010)

Collemattoni

This is a tiny seven hectare estate in San Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Marcello Bucci, who studied oenology under Signora Fuligni (Roberto Fuligni's aunt), is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
