Haut Bages Liberal always makes a wine that is almost a definition of Pauillac Cabernet, and it can be a bit blockish, monolithic. The 2004 is no exception, but the Cabernet is so fab this year that this is a strength rather than a weakness - purple-black, cassis, bright defining acidity, full and long. Super stuff. At a second tasting it seemed more than ever sweet and flowing with good spice a Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2005)

Very rich, oaky nose, solid black cherry fruit and a liquorice tone. Still showing freshness and energy, with an intense, spiced palate and marked acidity. Classic claret and very good in this vintage. Drinking range: 2014 - 2025 Rating: 90+ Decanter Magazine (Sept 2014)

Liquid purple, relatively opulent on the nose. Quite deep and trying very hard. Attractive spiciness and no excess of dryness of tannin. Well managed and well balanced. The only reproach one might make is that it is a little mild and low key ? but then so is Lafite. Quite a bit of weight. Very vigorous. Very good! Very fine tannins, there in abundance.
