LUPICAIA

2004 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Petit Verdot, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

This is the estate's 'flagship' wine, and one which regularly comes out top in the regional tastings - including Sassicaia. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from the estate's best 12.5 hectare vineyard, and aged eighteen months in new oak 'barriques'. Typified by deep notes of balsamic, eucalyptus and blackcurrants, the palate is rich and deep, with notes of dark chocolate and mineral fruit, and incredibly long, fine tannins. One of the best vintages produced at Terriccio, this is like a very fine Pauillac. L&S (Apr 2008)

Deep garnet. Perfumed with the sweetness of red fruit, and a tang of sour cherry. Remarkably youthful with just a touch of undergrowth and leather. Juicy yet complex, with those lovely aged Sangiovese characteristics of dried cherry and sweet spice (not oak spice) and tobacco. Mouthwateringly sweet/sour finish. 2010-2020 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2012)

Made by star consultant winemaker Carlo Ferrini, this exceptionally concentrated but elegant Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot) is in wonderful shape right now. The tannins are highly polished, the fruit very pure and plush, with notes of green herb amidst the mulberry and blackcurrant. The finish is long, the texture swish. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2012)

A classic Bordeaux mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Aged in new oak for 18 months. Very Pauillac-like, cigarbox and cassis nose, but with a beautifully controlled Italianate unctiousness that is never overblown. Great wine. Rating: 18.5/20 Michael Edwards (Jul 2009)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
