The 2005 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 27 September and 5 October. This has a gorgeous bouquet, probably the best that the Bécot family made up until that point. It brims over with redcurrant, cranberry and red plum, hints of rose petal and ripe Satsuma with the mineralité tucked in just underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine yet succulent tannin. There is a fresh line of acidity that is interwoven into dark berry fruit that counterbalances a somewhat structured finish laced with leather, allspice and just a touch of white pepper. This boasts impressive length, noticeably more than any earlier vintages. This excellent Saint-Émilion is just opening for business but it should offer two decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the château. Drinking range: 2018 - 2035 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2018)

Good ruby-red. Very ripe but lively aromas of kirsch, licorice, bitter chocolate, nuts and violet. Dense and sweet but vibrant, with a medicinal reserve and terrific grip to the superripe fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully rich, pliant wine with late-arriving tannins and a terrific spine for a slow evolution in bottle. Much more tightly wound today than the Becot family's La Gomerie, but there's plenty of fat fruit lurking. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2008)

Good bright ruby. At once liqueur-like and bright on the nose, with blackberry, bitter chocolate, mocha, graphite and sweet oak lifted by a cool quality. Lush and silky on entry, then primary, concentrated and sweet in the middle, with terrific density and depth to its black fruit and chocolate flavors. At once opulent and gripping. This builds slowly and spreads out on the back end, finishing with very fine, sweet tannins and superb persistence. A great vintage in the making for this property. Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Château Beau Séjour Bécot sits on the slopes above Château Angelus, half a mile west of the town of St Emilion. It was once part of a larger Château Beauséjour estate which was owned by the de Carle family who owned Château Figeac. After a couple of changes of ownership, the estate was divided in 1869 between the children of Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe - his daughter's share became Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse, whilst his son's, eventually, became Château Beau Séjour Bécot. The Bécot part of the name only became attached in 1969 when Michel Bécot bought the estate, and the Bécot family own it to this day. The controversial addition to Beau Séjour Bécot of some other vineyards owned by the Bécot family, an addition which nearly doubled the size of the estate, led to its demotion from Premier Grand Cru Classé status to "only" Grand Cru Classé status in 1979. Relentless work to prove that the new larger estate was as good, if not better, than before paid off in 1996 when Château Beau Séjour Bécot was re-elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. The vineyards are a fairly typical mix of 70% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation is in mostly new oak.
