2005 CHÂTEAU LYNCH BAGES 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac

2005 CHÂTEAU LYNCH BAGES 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac

Grapes: Origin: France, Bordeaux
Lea & Sandeman review
72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 15 Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep and rich - all the Haut Bages Averous (the second wine) wants to be but does not quite manage. Very full, fruit cake and freshness, like many of the best wines combining pure fruit and magnificent definition with great depth, density and succulence. Eastern spices and lots of velvety complexity. A great Lynch.   94/100

Intense crimson. Lightly fragrant. Soft, spicy, slightly tarry start and then iron hand in that appealing velvet glove. Very nicely done wine but I could do with just slightly more freshness. Competent certainly...A little bit of a fade on the finish. When I tasted it non-blind next to its second wine Haut Bages Averous, I was surprised not to see a greater difference in quality between them. It is certainly denser and drier - in fact the tannins are currently pretty inky on the finish. 2016-26   17

Bright, full ruby-red. Cassis, mocha, nutty oak and exotic spices on the nose. Very ripe, broad and rich; less focused than the 2006 but possesses considerably more volume and merlot sweetness. But this very pliant wine also boasts excellent lift. Finishes long and sweet, with lush tannins buffered by fruit. An excellent showing. (May/June 2007)   91-93/100

Tasted twice (yet again, the UGC bottle questionable) so this note was taken at the chateaux about 12-hours after drinking the Lynch Bages 1899. Deep, limpid purple colour. A beautiful cedar nose. Ripe raspberry, black cherries and a touch of vanilla. Beautiful balance, black toasty fruit, firm grip. Good acidity, very cohesive. Touch of mint on the finish. A top Lynch-Bages, much more authoritive and bold than recent vintages.   23/25

Currant, blackberry, cherry and hints of licorice. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins and a fresh finish. This is racy and pretty. Very refined. Very structured.   92-94/100

Black-red, quite massive, meaty wine, lots of extraction of floral, violetty fruit, very rich, voluptuous, marvellously ripe tannins, very successful. Drink 2010-35.   ****/18

This dense inky/purple-hued, elegant Lynch Bages will not make tasters forget the 2000, 1996, 1990, or 1989, but it is a big improvement over some recent indifferent efforts. Although lacking the massiveness expected in a vintage such as 2005, it possesses copious quantities of creme de cassis, licorice, smoke, and minerals. With good precision, lively acidity, wonderful purity and elegance, it may represent a modern-day clone of the brilliant 1955 fashioned by charismatic proprietor, Jean-Michel Cazes', father. The 2005 will require 3-5 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 20-25 years.   91-93/100

Good red-ruby. Sweet aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, menthol and flowers. Moderately dense, supple and lush, with fresh flavors of medicinal black cherry and minerals; round and ripe but not overly sweet. Solid Pauillac, with broad, ripe tannins and a building, lingering finish. (en primeur)   90-93/100
