TOKAJI ASZÚ

2005 5 Puttonyos Samuel Tinon

Origin Hungary, Tokaji
Sub-district Tokaji
ABV 11.8%

The 2005 Tokaji Aszu 5-Puttonyos (though it is written in very small letters on the label) is a blend of 90% Furmint and 10% Harslevelu that undergoes a whopping two-year barrel fermentation with constant oxygen contact until bottling with zero sulfur additions. It has a ripe bouquet of mandarin, clear honey and salted caramel that takes a little while to coalesce, but it unfolds wonderfully in the glass. The palate has a touch of bitter orange, marmalade and touches of walnut. It is quite a bullish Tokaji at first, aggressive and fiery even, but it is suffused with plenty of tension and race. There is no calmness here, but its feisty character makes it charming and unique, notwithstanding that I suspect it will age well. Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2013)

Samuel Tinon

Samuel Tinon was born in Bordeaux, and grew up in Sainte Croix du Mont where many sweet wines are produced. After he graduated in oenology, he travelled the world and worked in vineyards in Australia, US, Chile and Italy. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, Samuel worked in the vineyards of Tokaji where he learned all about this “terroir” and built up relationships with many people in the region. He decided to establish in Hungary in 1998 to produce his own Tokaji. Tokaji is considered to be one of the world’s finest sweet wines, historically the nectar of kings and tsars. The Aszu grapes produce this very specific wine that fills your glass with golden colours, honey, almonds, apricot flavours, and an infinite richness of aromas.
