Another fabulous effort from Marcello Bucci, the 2006 'Fontelontano Riserva' is an exciting wine. Richly textured and full of stuffing, yet with all the racy acidity of the vintage making it a wine that will be worth holding onto for a few years before drinking, and capabale of ageing a decade thereafter. Medium red. Slightly roasted aromas of red berries, tar and earth, plus a whiff of meat. Smooth and pliant in the mouth, but could use more primary fruit and definition. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins that turn a bit dry as the wine opens in the glass. I wanted more inner-mouth perfume and lift for 2006. Rating: 88 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2012)

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva emerges from the glass with ripe dark cherries, French oak, tar, licorice and spices. The 2006 shows no sign of softening. It seems clear the tannins will continue to dominate the wine's balance as the fruit fades. The early signs of oxidation are troubling for a young wine. Drinking range: 2014 - 2022 Rating: 88 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

A new wine from this tiny, seven-hectare estate which sits above the much larger and better known Col d'Orcia on the south side of the Montalcino hill. Dark, deep and concentrated with sweet, spicy fruit and hints of liquorice and Marmite. Dense, but fine, velvety tannins and plenty of acidity. A long life assured, so don't broach for at least two years (we admit that we aren't always patent enough to take our own advice). Rating: 94 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2012)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
