Quite closed on the nose, but a lovely texture. Pure black fruitiness coats the palate but remains fresh. Tastes real, and really likeable. Rating: 91+ L&S (Apr 2007)

The fruit on the nose has an attractive peppery character giving a lift to the mix of plum and mulberry. Sweet fruit shows at the start of the palate but there is enough mid freshness to balance and add brightness to the fruit towards the back. 2011-18 Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Red-ruby. Cool aromas of currant, mocha, graphite, tobacco and herbs; I don't find this wine's typical Vosne-like black fruit and floral character today. Supple and moderately broad but could use a bit more definition and eclat A moderately ripe Rol Valentin, finishing with dusty tannins and a lightly peppery quality. Rating: 88 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2009)

Bright red-ruby. Black raspberry, dark chocolate and coffee; as is often the case, this reminded me of Vosne-Romanee. Silky-sweet but not particularly thick or pliant; offers lively flavors of blackberry, violet and minerals. A very firm, serious style for this property, finishing with substantial, broad tannins that avoid hardness. Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2007)

Château Rol Valentin

Château Rol Valentin is one of the relatively new 'Vins de garage' emerging in the Saint-Émilion reigon of Bordeaux. The wines are typically very deeply coloured, intensely flavoured, and generally only made in very small quantities - the estate comprises just 7.3 hectares. Purchased in 1994 by ex-footballer Eric Prisette, who employed well-known French vigneron Stéphane Derenoncourt as the wine consultant at the property, Château Rol Valentin was bought by Nicolas and Alexandra Robin in 2009. The grapes at Château Rol Valentin are fermented in wooden tanks and then aged in 100% new oak barrels.
