Grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Origin France, Champagne
ABV 12%

The 2006 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking now, as the flavors are just beginning to show the first signs of development. Peach, apricot, brioche, mint and sweet white flowers open up in a gracious, complex Champagne that is super-expressive today. The weight of Pinot Noir comes through beautifully in the 2006, a resonant and inviting Champagne that hits all the right notes. Rating: 92 L&S (Nov 2015)

Churchill’s favourite champagne is always a treat and the 2006 doesn’t disappoint. This bounces out of the glass with notes of apple and brioche and a rich, nutty finish. A wonderful pairing with smoked salmon, it has an uplifting acidity that makes it a perfect wine to serve just before Christmas lunch. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Dec 2016)

The 2006 Brut Vintage is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need time to fully unwind. A host of apricot pit, chamomile, orange blossom and smoke notes fill out the wine's ample frame effortlessly, but it is the wine's pure weight that stands out most at this stage. The ripeness of the year comes through as the wine continues to flesh out in the glass, but the 2006 is best cellared for at least a few years. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Aug 2016)

Champagne Pol Roger

Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
