This is layered and generous, with lots of ripe fruit and toasted oak. Full, velvety and very rich. Impressive for the vintage. Better after 2014 Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2014)

The 2006 Barolo Cannubi presents a more delicate expression of Nebbiolo than the decidedly virile Costa Grimaldi. As it sits in the glass the wine displays wonderful inner perfume, with pretty suggestions of menthol, red berries and spices, all buttressed by silky tannins. Sweet, sensual and enveloping all the way, the Cannubi possesses superb poise and harmony. 2016-2026 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2013)

...now it is getting impossible to choose from the great Nebbiolo based wines: Sottimano’s three single vineyard Barbaresco and a riserva and three Barolo from Einaudi, all of which would repay keeping but are drinkable now, offered at fair price. But for concentration and potential opulence, ‘Nei Cannubi’ Barolo 2006, Einaudi gets the prize. The concentration is most obvious on the nose with the palate still very taut, but the luxurious length and the subtle oak accompaniment sets it apart. £44 makes it a special occasion bottle but it has the quality to match … and compared to some wines (see below) seems rather reasonable. David Way (www.winefriend.org) (Apr 2011)

The Cannubi fame shows its superiority here with a deft complex nose of smoked paprika, smoky and meaty charm. The palate holds some spicy, leathery notes with the texture of an undeniably tannic wine, but then this will hold for years to come, such is the terrific length. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Apr 2011)

Podere Luigi Einaudi

Firmly established as one of Dogliani's leading estates, Giorgio Ruffo (married to Paola Einaudi) continues to produce quite outstanding Dolcettos in a class well above any others we have tasted, and outstanding Barolos which are among the finest and most elegant of the region. Robert Parker recently wrote: ' Consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola has been instrumental in ratcheting up the quality at this historic property. I can't think of too many estates that have made such significant strides in just the last few years.'
