This large vineyard in Macau (near Cantemerle and Giscours, not Hong Kong) produces a blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It is a consistent choice among shrewd wine consumers looking for good value from Bordeaux. The deep ruby-colored 2006 exhibits sweet red and black currant aromas intermixed with notions of toasty oak, damp earth, and spice. Richly fruity, soft, and round, it is best drunk over the next 3-4 years. Rating: 87 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Sept 2011)
Medium ruby. Precise aromas of blackberry, black cherry, minerals, spices and licorice. Juicy, suave and lively, with aromatic flavors of black fruits and bitter chocolate. Nicely ripe but classically dry. Fine-grained, broad and long, leaving behind a flavor of crushed blackberry. Rating: 86-89 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2007)
Soft berry fruit, good oak, smooth and supple, forward, attractive. 2010-15. Rating: *** www.decanter.com (Apr 2007)
Château Cambon la Pelouse
One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
