The 2006 Climens has a quintessential bouquet with a very slight adhesive scent that permeates the honeyed fruit, touches of white peach and orchard fruit. The palate is well balanced with a tangy, marmalade-tinged opening. Good depth, not as complex as the 2005 or 2009 and with quite a linear finish. Fine, but comparatively conservative. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2022)

Proprietor Berenice Lurton continues to turn out one of the utterly profound wines from the Barsac Sauternes region. The 2006 is not up there with their perfect 2001, but it is a beautiful wine and stands out as one of the top wines of 2006. Medium gold, with a slightly more advanced color than I am used to seeing in a young Climens, the wine displays waxy honeyed pineapple and delicate marmalade and citrus notes with a restrained use of new oak. The wine cuts a full-bodied swath across the palate with terrific acidity, freshness, and moderate sweetness. This is a beauty, but perhaps on a much faster evolutionary track than some of their greatest vintages. Rating: 94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com

What a meticulously managed vineyard this is! Just how well Bérénice Lurton and her team did only became clear once I was at the UGC tasting. As usual, Bérénice had not assembled, so only permitted tasting at the château where I saw five lots, two of them `micro assemblage%u2019. Overall, they showed great purity of fruit, exceptional length, richness and freshness, allied to great complexity and more homogeneity as between the lots than is usual. The average is 13.4 alc with 150 grams residual sugar, reflecting a vintage tendency for fermentations to finish with less alcohol and more sweetness than usual. One of the great Climens for sure. From 2012. Rating: ***** Decanter Magazine

Château Climens

Barsac Premier Cru 1855 The name "Climens" appears to be derived from a local dialect word meaning unfertile land. It is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Coutet), although the golden age for Climens came later after Henri Gounouilhou bought the estate in 1885, guiding it through phlloxera and oidium, managing to expand the vineyards and, on occasions, rivalling even Château d'Yquem. In 1971, Château Climens was purchased by the great Lucien Lurton and is now run by his daughter Bérénice. The 30ha of vineyard are planted entirely with Semillon. The yield for the Grand Vin is very low, averaging 7hl/ha. The grapes are fermented in small barrels (a third new each year) and aged for 20 to 24 months before release.
