The 2006 Corton-Charlemagne Vieilles Vignes has a generous, slightly petrolly bouquet that lacks a little finesse considering the vineyard. The palate is balanced, with good acidity and just a touch of volatility, but the wine feels a bit out of sorts. Incidentally, after Guffens's contract expired, this vineyard was sold to Domaine Chanson. Rating: 86 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2020)

Green apple, quinine and pepper on the nose. Then surprisingly round and sweet in the mouth, with a distinctly chewy, tactile quality to the flavors of apple, pear, spice and spearmint. A round style of Corton-Charlemagne, stuffed with fruit and long on the aftertaste but just a tad warm. This fruit was also picked early, but the alcohol here is a solid 14%. Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Sept 2008)

Already looks weighty in the glass! Very fresh and well integrated on the palate. One of the more exciting Corton Charlemagnes I have tasted this week. Good acidity but weight and precision too. 2011-18 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2008)

A strikingly elegant and high-toned nose of green apple, white flower and hints of lemon rind merge into intensely stony and pure full-bodied flavors that deliver excellent punch and length on the explosive finish. This is still a bit awkward but this indisputably possesses the best material in the range. 2012+ Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2008)

Verget

Jean-Marie Guffens founded Verget with a fellow Belgian who was a customer of his, Jean Rijckaert (the name originally stood for 'Vins d'Établissements Rijckaert Guffens...' - it never was clear where the 'et' came from). From the moment that Jean-Marie arrived in the Mâconnais his incredible drive inspired many of the local young vignerons to try for a level of quality that had never occurred to them before, and Jean-Marie's close contacts with many of these growers have allowed him to source some of the very best fruit for Verget. His views, always forcefully expressed (and often more forcefully than diplomatically), may not have found universal favour, but they certainly provoked a level of discussion that had never existed before, and he was always ready to put his words into actions. Not every wine Jean-Marie has ever made has proved an absolute success, but if you are trying to push the boundaries all the time, it is inevitable that sometimes you will overstep the mark. He has undoubtedly been responsible for some of the most inspirational wines to come from Burgundy in recent years.
