IL BOSCO SYRAH

2006 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro

Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14.5%

At last Il Bosco has reached the level of quality that early vintages such as 1997 promised. A much tighter selection in the vineyards, with the aim of producing smaller quantities, has resulted in a truly spectacular Syrah of great class. Now presented in a Rhone style bottle, the wine certainly has more of the Northern Rhone characteristics than before, with gamey notes intermingled with the sweet blackcurrant and cherry fruit. Crunchy tannins, dry fruits, great texture and length all show promise for a wine that will develop along the lines of a great Hermitage. L&S (Sept 2009)

The estate's 2006 Cortona Syrah Il Bosco is a beautiful, deep wine endowed with notable clarity and precision. Blueberry jam, spices, earthiness and subtle toasted oak emerge gently from this articulate, elegant wine. Today, the 2006 Il Bosco is still quite vibrant, but in time it should acquire greater varietal complexity. It is a terrific effort from D'Alessandro. Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2013)

Intense licorice, blackberries, minerals, sandalwood and flowers on the nose. Full-bodied, with superpolished and silky tannins that turn to butterscotch, toffee, berry and chocolate aftertaste, with just a hint of meat and spice. Tannic and powerful, yet balanced. Best after 2012. Rating: 95 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Sept 2009)

Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro

Massimo d'Alessandro is passionate about the Rhone and Syrah in particular. Having long since identified the 'terroir' and micro-climate of his Cortona vineyards as being almost identical to that of the Northern Rhone, he imported the best Viognier and Syrah clones, densely planted in the early 1990s, and set about making the best wines of the region. His Syrah is now rated world-class, particularly in vintages such as 2001 and 2004.
