Grapes Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Cab Sauv, Tannat, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 13.5%

We loved this vintage of Terriccio's Syrah and Mourvedre blend, which brings a great twist to the estate's Cabernet based wines. Fresh and focussed fruit make the wine stand out. L&S (Aug 2011)

The 2006 Castello del Terriccio is a beautifully centered, poised wine layered with exceptional purity in its aromas and flavors. Ripe dark fruit, menthol, espresso, spices and licorice emerge from this focused, powerful Castello. Ideally, the wine is best cellared for a number of years. The Castello is one of Tuscany’s slowest wines to mature, at least in its early years. In 2006 the blend is 50% Syrah, 25% Petit Verdot and 25% other grapes. Drinking range: 2016 - 2026 Rating: 95+ Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate (Aug 2011)

The first vintage was 2000 but there was no 2001. Mainly Syrah with Mourvèdre, a tiny bit of Tannat and Cabernet Franc. It may eventually contain the owner’s new passion, Marselan. 'I met this very pleasant, clever nurseryman near Chambéry and went for two summers with him for a couple of weeks to taste wine all along southern France because I wanted to make a more Mediterranean wine. He knew everyone. We tried almost 100 different wines. At the end of a long discussion, we chose these varieties.' Quite dark crimson. Very heady and glamorous. Great balance. Great quality achieved by putting only, say, 40% of the Syrah crop into it. Mulberries. Good freshness. Quite evolved already. Drink 2010-2016. Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2011)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
