BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2007 Fuligni

Grapes Sangiovese Grosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
ABV 14%

A fabulously complete and expressive Brunello with ripe tannins, succulent fruit and lovely finish. This will be more immediate drinking than the racier 2006, but have no doubt about the fact that it will also age very well in bottle for a decade and more. Drinking range: 2015 - 2024 L&S (Feb 2012)

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine that brings together the richness of the vintage and the house’s continuing move to a more traditional style. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint, spices and anise are woven together beautifully in this large-scaled, generous wine. The wine gains volume and depth in the glass as the flavors built to a huge crescendo. The 2007 was aged exclusively in cask. This is a great showing from Fuligni. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. Drinking range: 2017 - 2027 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

Concentrated ruby with orange-tinged rim. Very young and spicy. Juvenile on the palate too. Quite closed but fragrant finale. Lots of stalky tannin demanding more time. 2014-2020 Rating: 16 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Mar 2012)

This just-released vintage is very young, but beautifully polished and fragrant and the tannins, although substantial, are so fine they seem to have been air-brushed in over the layers of savoury and sweet-fruit flavours. The 2007 vintage for Brunello is not generally rated quite as the 2006, but we love the elegant classicism of this Fuligni wine, which isn't even a Riserva. Rating: 92 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2012)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
