0.4ha, SW-facing vine, 380m on stony red clay in Sant’Angelo in Colle. Ripe dark fruit and cedar on the nose. Sticky red berry fruit on the palate with firmly focused oak and fruit tannins. Punchy. (Monty Waldin) Drinking range: 2017 - 2022 Rating: 91 Decanter Magazine (Mar 2016)

The nose here is reminiscent of Christmas with interesting aromas of nuts, holly and mince pies. This is lovely and dense on the palate with fine and powering tannins and a long finish. A late-release Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, but this could still do with three or four more years in bottle to soften the tannins. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2014)

Good full red. Coffee and herb nuances complicate dark red cherry on the nose and palate. More austere today than the 2009 classico, finishing with rising tannins that are just this side of dry on the long, mouth-coating finish. Rating: 91+ Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2014)

Collemattoni

This is a tiny seven hectare estate in San Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Marcello Bucci, who studied oenology under Signora Fuligni (Roberto Fuligni's aunt), is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
