TOKAJI SZAMORODNI

2007 Dry Samuel Tinon

Origin Hungary, Tokaji
Sub-district Tokaji
ABV 13.75%

The second release of the dry Szamorodni from Tinon, which is very expressive, intense, notes of nuts and apple, delicately spicy. On the palate it is very intense and complex, nut, aszù berries aromas and dried raisins. It's a very refreshing wine and at the same time incredibly long and complex. It's very surprising. The wine maker describes it as a 'wild racehorse'! L&S (Nov 2013)

The 2007 Tokaji Dry Szamorodni is the second release after his 2003. A blend of 90% Furmint and 10% Harslevelu, it is aged under flor in 220-liter Hungarian oak barrels and only bottled after five years. It has a very salted walnut, dried apple, quasi vin jaune, almost sherry-like nose that is striking. The palate follows suit with attacking, oxidative notes of walnut, bitter lemon and a touch of salted licorice. There is plenty of character here, something reminiscent of the sea. Once you are accustomed to Tinon’s take on Tokaji, it becomes almost addictive, and it would work brilliantly as an aperitif. This is unusual, unorthodox, but intriguing and well-crafted. Samuel Tinon

Samuel Tinon was born in Bordeaux, and grew up in Sainte Croix du Mont where many sweet wines are produced. After he graduated in oenology, he travelled the world and worked in vineyards in Australia, US, Chile and Italy. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, Samuel worked in the vineyards of Tokaji where he learned all about this “terroir” and built up relationships with many people in the region. He decided to establish in Hungary in 1998 to produce his own Tokaji. Tokaji is considered to be one of the world’s finest sweet wines, historically the nectar of kings and tsars. The Aszu grapes produce this very specific wine that fills your glass with golden colours, honey, almonds, apricot flavours, and an infinite richness of aromas.
