2007 was that fantastic ripe year in Tuscany, the 2007 'straight' is impressive for its weight and concentrated richness, leading me to expect the 2007 Riserva would be massive and rather atypical, but this is just not the case, it's as though they saved all the finesse of the vintage for this cuvée, so that it is precise, scented with blonde tobacco (very distinctive), and on palate completely seamless, delicate and yet with soaring power and complexity. Very very impressive and really just utterly gorgeous. I think it will go on and on, but say 2016-2025++? L&S (Mar 2013)

Deep, savory and intense with notes of dried blueberries, five spice, mushroom, gravy, grilled herbs and dried oysters. Deliciously spicy on the palate, too, with a full body and firm, sleek and well-integrated tannins. Framed and concentrated, yet there’s beautiful freshness at the end. Drink or hold. Rating: 97 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2022)

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows cherry and plum sauce, lifted by sweet sage and mint, yet still quite rich and intense. With time, it dips down to earth with a mix of flowery undergrowth and wet stone. It’s velvety and weighty, yet a core of stimulating acidity and inner spice saturates the palate as dark red fruits penetrate deeply. Though still lightly structured, the 2007 is drinking beautifully today, showing only a hint of its maturity through a nuance of crushed fall leaves. A resonating note of licorice lingers incredibly long. Drinking range: 2021 - 2029 Rating: 95 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jan 2022)

We reviewed this very fine Brunello di Montalcino two-and-a-half years ago, giving it 94 points, but we thought it would be interesting to see how it's developed – and logically enough it's now a much more relaxed and savoury experience, the 'autumnal undergrowth' character we identified back then now moving more into focus, but that deliciously à point fruit concentration still evident in the squirt of juicy red cherry fruit. A fine wine that will continue to improve for at least another decade. Rating: 94 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2017)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
