2007 CHÂTEAU CALON SÉGUR 3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

2007 CHÂTEAU CALON SÉGUR 3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

Grapes: Origin: France, Bordeaux
Lea & Sandeman review
75% Cabernet Sauvignon. Good deep colour, spiced red and black fruit on the nose. Pure and mid-weight, an oakiness evident (100% new wood) which is very different to the high-toast flashiness on Cos, but just as attractive - a tight-grained firmness. Raspberry and damson interweave on the palate, great succulent purity to the fruit, very fine-grained tannins. A lovely aromatic fatness to the finish which is very long. 'it is all down to the great Cabernets' said Mme de Gasqueton, in the blending 'the aromatic majesty of the Cabernets was ruined by the Merlots, so not much went into the Grand Vin, although the Merlots in themselves were not bad and will make a very fine Marquis de Calon'.   91-92/100

Other reviews and comments
(a 76/24 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Good bright, deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of blackcurrant, chocolate, smoke, leather and flowers. Sweet, lush and ripe, with a rather soft texture to the flavors of chocolate, mocha, brown spices, menthol and black olive. In spite of its noteworthy breadth, this conveys a rather high-pH mouth feel and good rather than outstanding intensity. Finishes with good length and rather soft tannins.   87-89/100

Fresh and fruity, with lovely currant, blackberry and smoke character. Medium body, fine tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Refined and delicate.   87-90/100
James Suckling, The Wine Spectator
Bright crimson but not blackish purple exaggeration. Sweet start, some gentle fully ripe fruit. Very searing St-Estèphe tannins on the finish but there is definitely juice and flesh here. Neat, dry finish. Very competent. An attempt at gentle texture without sacrificing anything to too much technique. 2016-22   16.5
