Radda in Chianti. 100% Sangiovese. Oenologist: Piero Lanza. Bordeaux-lookalike-ruby with orange tinge. Seems ever so slightly stewed, covered by a layer of crunchy sweet red fruits. On the finish again a light stewed quality, but still very attractive tactile palate. (WS)

While I found the Chianti Classico 2009 rather unfocused and atypical, the riserva has the classic sour cherry and mildly clove and spicy nose plus a beautifully dense palate. A bit of smoke and chocolate on the finish tells us we are in a fairly modernist camp but this is a wine with lots of personality and many years of development ahead of it. And while £24 is quite a lot of money, this is well worth it.

A beguiling perfumed and herbal nose that's juicy, moreish and inviting. A lovely elegant balance of acidity and tannin with that herbal cherry note singing through to the long finish. A surprising alcohol level – impossible to detect, such is the balance here.
