GUSBOURNE

2007 Blanc de Blancs Brut (Late Disgorged)

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin United Kingdom, England
ABV 12%

Seductive and tertiary, possessing an open nose of honeycomb, golden syrup, coffee bean, caramel, chocolate and struck match. Full in body but focused, with hint of baked peaches and a light, elegant mid-palate, this is a really impressive glassful. (Gold Medal Winner). Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 (Jul 2015)

Very developed and yeasty, this is delightfully rich and truffle-scented; shows its age but carries it beautifully. Complex palate of honey and cream and mushrooms on toasted brioche, all underpinned by refreshing acidity. A joy to drink; hedonistic. (Susie Barrie's top fizz to try.) Drinking range: 2015 - 2017 Rating: 95 Decanter Magazine (May 2015)

This had a full 70 months on lees and nine months after disgorgement. Really rather fine nose with genuine development. On the palate there is good ol' English crisp acidity but it's all very clean and fresh and not tiring to drink. Quite a breeze of a wine. It seems a mite expensive but it does show that it can be worth giving English fizz more time on the lees. The finish is really very impressive. A sore-throat wine (written by someone with one). Drinking range: 2014 - 2018 Rating: 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2014)

Gusbourne

Despite boasting only a short history (the 2006 was their first release) Gusbourne Estate vineyards have notched up quite a reputation, winning awards along the way. The vineyard is at Appledore in Kent, roughly mid-way between Ashford and Rye. Planted with the 'usual' trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the grapes are hand-picked. A small portion of the harvest is fermented in oak, but most of it takes place in stainless-steel before the second fermentation in bottle. The wines are aged on their lees for a minimum of 22 months before dégorgement.
