CHÂTEAU DE FIEUZAL

2008 Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Pessac-Léognan
Classification Cru Classé
ABV 13.5%

Mid colour. Nose is quite dumb. Palate spicy with a sweetness of oak, mid-weight, fruit follows through. Ripe and attractively round and supple. Feels like it will end up oaky, but the fruit and balance are there. Nicely long and sweet on the finish. Rating: 89-90 L&S (Apr 2009)

A big time sleeper of the vintage and a terrific success for Fieuzal, the 2008 is a wine to buy given its realistic price. Dense plum/purple-colored with a soaring bouquet of blue and black fruits, unsmoked cigar tobacco, lead pencil shavings and spring flowers, it is a suave, savory, medium to full-bodied, remarkably silky, appealing wine to enjoy over the next 12-15 years. Bravo! Drinking range: 2011 - 2026 Rating: 92 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)

Rating: 90-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2009)

Offers notes of mineral, violet and other flowers. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and very clean fruit. Minerally and fresh on the finish. Rating: 87-90 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2009)

Château de Fieuzal

Chateau de Fieuzal is named in honour of the family that owned it at the start of the nineteenth century. After that, the Bordeaux wine property was owned by the Griffon family. The Griffon’s, who were lucky to have connections to Pope Léon XIII in Bordeaux, were able to fill the Vatican’s cellars with their wines from Pessac Leognan. de Fieuzal was purchased by the Ricard family. The Ricard’s owned multiple Bordeaux wine estates including Domaine de Chevalier and Malartic-Lagravière. Today, Chateau de Fieuzal is owned by Lochlann Quinn, the chairman of Allied Irish Banks.

The Bordeaux wine vineyards are planted on sand and gravel soils. The 39 hectare vineyard is planted to red and white grape varietals. For the reds, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot. The white grapes are planted to 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon.
