CHÂTEAU RIEUSSEC

2008 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 12.5%

Sample is very oaky, and this rather spoils the effect - it is too much for the wine as it stands. Sweet and rich and pure, slight lack of personality, so the question must be will it find some in the élevage? Rating: 89+? L&S (Apr 2009)

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Chateau Rieussec 2008 should become an excellent Sauternes for the vintage. It has a floral bouquet with peach, tinned apricot and a touch of marmalade, all with fine delineation, and touches of lemon curd developing with aeration. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, with great depth and a luscious, vanillary note with hints of orange peel, marmalade and quince towards the long finish. Excellent. Tasted January 2012. Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2012)

The 2008 Rieussec has a lifted, honeyed, slightly petrolly nose with great definition and lift. Touches of white flowers and white peach/honeysuckle develop with further aeration. The palate has a vibrant orange and mandarin flavored entry, very good balance, nicely poised with touches of vanilla inflecting the viscous, honeyed fruit on the finish. Classy but the oak obfuscates this Rieussec at the moment. Rating: 91-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com

Rich and layered, with honey, caramel, botrytis spice and vanilla aromas and flavors. Long and very flavorful. Rating: 89-92 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. The modern history of Rieussec, and the beginning of a remarkable rennaissance, starts with the purchase of the estate by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. A new winery was completed in 1989 and yields restricted to maximise quality. There are 92ha of vineyard, planted with 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrels from DBR's own cooperage. Aging is 18 to 26 months depending on the year, including 55% in new barrels.
