The 2008 Tronquoy-Lalande felt a little feisty and showed a touch of VA on the nose, a bit of the old boot polish coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, a little smudged in the mouth and I would like to have seen more detail and precision on the cassis-tinged finish. Historically a notorious under-performer, under the ownership of Martin Bouygues, this St.-Estephe’s 2008 is the finest wine I have tasted from Tronquoy Lalande in thirty years. Representing 62% of the estate’s production, the 2008 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a whopping 13% Petit Verdot. Loaded with black currant and spring flower characteristics as well as a nice lashing of minerality, this sleeper of the vintage is a medium to full-bodied, luscious St.-Estephe to enjoy now and over the next 10-12 years.
