SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO

2008 25 Anni Arnaldo-Caprai

Grapes Sagrantino
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Umbria
Sub-district Sagrantino di Montefalco
ABV 13%

This is the selection of the estate's best Sagrantino, first produced in 1993 as a celebration of the estate's jubilee, and aged for 24 months in new oak. Suprisingly this seems less oaky on the attack (than Collepiano), but it is huge, with a massive mouthcoating tannic structure. However, as the tannins dissipate the fruit emerges and leaves a very long and very fine finish. This is a great wine which one day will be outstanding. L&S (Apr 2012)

Arnaldo-Caprai

The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.
