FONSECA

2008 Late Bottled Vintage

Origin Portugal, Port
ABV 20%

Deep colour, rich, sweet fruit with plummy notes and rather a lovely (not spirity) finish. Late Bottled Vintage 'Unfiltered', so may require a little careful handling and probably worth decanting. L&S (Dec 2013)

Open, opulent wild mint and berry fruit nose. Rich, succulent summer fruit on the palate: plums and cherries, backed by firm, stony tannins with a touch of black pepper. Bottle with a stopper cork. For drinking now and over the next two years. Drinking range: 2014 - 2017 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Oct 2014)

Rich, ripe and fleshy on the nose the start of the palate is lush black fruited with ripe damson richness. Although it is firmer in the middle with structured tannins black plum and ripe black cherry fill out the back palate and enrich the finish. 2016-28 Rating: 93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Jun 2014)

Fonseca is one of the great names in Port, and the latest vintage of their LBV is an excellent expression of the house style, brimming with concentrated ripe fruits of the forest, dark chocolate and cake-box spice, it's a polished, purring gem. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2014)

Fonseca

Manuel Pedro Guimaraens bought out the Fonseca family's share of Fonseca & Monteiro in 1822, sold with the proviso that the Company would always bear the Fonseca name, and the Guimaraens family have controlled Fonseca ever since, even after absorbtion by Taylors, Fladgate & Yeatman in 1948. Not long after taking control of the Company, due to his support of the deposed King Pedro IV, Manuel was forced to flee Portugal (allegedly in an empty wine barrel) and settled in London, from where Fonseca was run until 1927 when the Guimaraens family returned to Portugal. David Guimaraens is the winemaker today, not only at Fonseca but Taylors too. In recent years especially, Fonseca and Taylors have elevated themselves clearly above their rivals for the sheer quality and prestige of their Vintage Ports.
