SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO

2008 Collepiano Arnaldo-Caprai

Grapes Sagrantino
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Umbria
Sub-district Sagrantino di Montefalco
ABV 14.5%

In spite of the massive tannin stucture of this 100% Sangrantino, it is packed with fabulously expressive fruit which makes it perfectly balanced. A very big wine and with extraordinary length, and yet not at all tiring to taste, in fact almost uplifting on the finish. A great 'Collepiano' that will reward those who wait. (I recently served the 2000 from magnum and it was magnificent, even if it could age another decade). L&S (Apr 2012)

Very dark, almost impenetrable. Recipe-like nose of very ripe fruit and sweet oak. Slightly dry tannins, but with bright fruit on the finish. Rating: 16 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Dec 2014)

Caprai’s 2008 Sagrantino Collepiano is a little softer and rounder then the 25 Anni, but I don’t view that as a negative, in fact if anything it makes the wine more approachable young. Varietal dark fruit, leather, tobacco and savory herbs all take shape in the glass, all supported by firm yet nicely balanced tannins. The Collepiano has really come along in the last few years and has established itself as a dual flagship offering in the range. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2013)

Arnaldo-Caprai

The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.
