BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2009 Fuligni

Grapes Sangiovese Grosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
ABV 14%

Bright red. Mesmerizingly pure and intense aromas of raspberry, sour red cherry, minerals, licorice and violet. Sweet, lush and deep, with outstanding clarity and lift to the pure flavors of red cherry, raspberry and flint. Pristine and very long on the vibrant finish, which features extremely sophisticated tannins and superb length. The wine's minerally, flinty quality runs through from nose to aftertaste. A paradigm of cooler-climate Montalcino sangiovese, this is the year's best Brunello, and it will cost you a fraction as much as more famous Brunellos that other wine writers will surely score higher. Rating: 94 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (Jul 2014)

An open, resonant wine, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino impresses for its supple personality and gorgeous overall balance. Sweet tobacco, dried flowers, red cherries and menthol wrap around the palate in a deep, fleshy wine loaded with character. Readers will find plenty of near and medium term appeal here. The 2009 finishes with striking aromatics, sweet red fruit and gorgeous, subtle herbal overtones. Drinking range: 2016 - 2029 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2014)

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a polished, silky wine with bright berry highlights that are enhanced by balsam herb, cola, light spice, dried tobacco, smoky notes and crushed mineral. The vintage does not have the immediate complexity of other vintages at this young stage, but I’m willing to bet that this wine will steadily increase in layering and expressiveness as it evolves in the bottle. Drink: 2017-2023. Rating: 91 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Mar 2014)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
