CHÂTEAU COUTET

2009 1er Cru Classé Barsac

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Barsac
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13.5%

Fine, Sauvignon-influenced fruit aromas. Fresh and delicate, silky, not as unctuous as Guiraud, for example, but good definition. Guava, sweet succulent and juicy. Finishes with power of flavour and real conviction. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2010)

The 2009 Coutet feels a little simple on the nose compared to its peers, plenty of tropical fruit here such as mango and passion fruit but I would like more terroir expression. The palate is well balanced with an unctuous texture with fine acidity. This is not dissimilar to the 2009 Doisy-Daëne whereby there is much more quality in the mouth than on the nose, finishing with a detailed, stem ginger and pineapple tinged finish that is very appealing. I suspect this will improve in bottle. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2045 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

The fruit is rich and ripe sweet apricots, yellow peaches and candied citrus peel. The sweetness on the mid palate gives a sensuous lush feel there is a lovely depth of fruit yet under all of the ripeness and the sweetness a touch of lime and grapefruit refreshes and balances. 2020-40 Rating: 95 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk

(a blend of 75% semillon, 23% sauvignon and 2% muscadelle; 14+% alcohol; 146 g/l residual sugar) Bright, deep golden yellow. Delicate smoky nuances complicate aromas of ripe citrus fruits, brown sugar and vanilla on the floral, perfumed nose. Enters very rich and creamy, showing very good balance to its pineapple jam, star fruit, white peach and citrus flavors. Finishes long, creamy-rich and smooth, with strong botrytis character and a lingering flinty note. One of the top '09 Sauternes I tasted, and one of the best young Coutets ever. This should age exceptionally well. Rating: 92-94 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website

Château Coutet

Barsac Premier Cru 1855 A square tower indicates the origins of Château Coutet as a 13th Century fortification. Indeed the château is a mixture of various styles added at various times in its long history. At the turn of the 19th Century, Château Coutet came into the possession of the Lur-Saluces family, owners of Château d'Yquem, and they owned it until 1923. Since 1977, Coutet has been owned by the Baly family, represented today by brothers Dominique and Philippe. Château Coutet is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Climens). There are 38.5ha of vineyard, given over 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Wines are fermented in wood (50% new) and aged for up to 18 months.
